The Golden Lion, Fielden Square, Todmorden OL14 6LZ
admission free, donations welcome
Some mighty free-jazz comes to The Golden Lion, with two of Europe's finest veterans teaming up with one of the north's best young talents.
Hans-Peter Hiby (saxophone),
Michael Bardon (bass/electronics),
Paul Hession (drums)
Hans Peter Hiby was born in Gevelsberg, Germany in 1962 and has lived in Wuppertal since 1967. He spent much of his childhood with Caspar Brötzmann and his first tenor saxophone was given to him by Peter Brötzmann in 1979. Hiby has deep roots within the Wuppertaler free jazz community and has played with Peter Kowald, Willi Kellers, Johannes Bauer, Sirone and Louis Moholo.
He first encountered British drummer Paul Hession in the Winter of 1986, when Paul made a stop in Wuppertal while driving to Berlin. Hession became known from the mid 80’s for his work with The Siger Band, which included trombonist Paul Rutherford, and the Hession/Wilkinson/Fell trio, as well as for his playing with Borah Bergmann, Lol Coxhill, Derek Bailey, Marshall Allen, Joe McPhee and Squarepusher.
In 2016 Hiby and Hession chose to invite Irish bass player Michael Bardon to form a trio, to play concerts throughout Germany and to record the CD Roots for Krakow-based Not Two Records. Bardon is from a younger generation of improvisers and is known for his dynamic bass playing with musicians such as US drummer Sean Noonan, pianist Matthew Bourne and Leeds-based Shatner’s Bassoon, who played a storming gig at the Lion in 2016.
The gig will be downstairs in the main room of the pub and will be free entry, though donations will be very welcome.
